MaPEP Project
Maize Production Enhancement Project
Since 2016, Arise and Shine Maize Millers established links with maize farmers in Oyam, Kiryandongo and Masindi district through Area Cooperative Enterprises (ACEs) to tap into the already existing organizations and memberships that would generate the grain in adequate quantities. Cooperative Enterprise are new initiative by farmers to consolidate themselves into groups, bulk their produce and approach market as a block, with higher negotiating power for better prices.
Arise and Shine Maize Millers then, identified and engaged these Cooperative Enterprises through contract farming, and Long Term Assurances, to support sustainable maize production, trade and milling activities. Through these ACEs, Arise and Shine Maize Millers is supporting smallholder farmers with extension services, trainings in Good Agronomic Practices (GAAP), Post-Harvest Handlings (PHH) and farming as business.
The trainings are conducted through Lead Farmers Model, where Arise and Shine field extension officers trains changes agents, and facilitate them to train their respective farmers’ group members. A monitoring mechanism is therefore established to ensure these trainings trickled down to primary beneficiaries
Arise and Shine also provide basic postharvest facilities like tarpaulins, motorized maize shellers amongst others to ensure quality production and reduce postharvest loses. Experience has shown that farmers loses about 40% of their produce in postharvest handlings alone. Upon adequate and quality production, Arise and Shine then provide market for what farmers’ produced.
Meanwhile, the Area Cooperative Enterprises mobilizes farmers to bulk their maize to be sold to Arise and Shine Maize Millers as a priority market.
Through this arrangement, Arise and Shine Maize Millers is currently working with Myene, Abekam and Minakulu Area Cooperative Enterprise in Oyam District, Nyamahasa and Bweyale Area Cooperative Enterprise in Kiryadongo District, and Gukwatamanzi, Pakanyi and Juwakali Area Cooperative enterprises in Masindi District. By these, Arise and Shine maize Millers is supporting over 10,000 farmers, 40% of which are women and 60% youths. Arise and Shine expect to swell this number to over 20,000 farmers by 2021, producing 40,000MT per season.
Arise and Shine main focus remained on enhancing productivity of youths and women, and changing their economics through productive engagement is maize production. Since our engagement with these farmers’ groups, there has been recorded increased productivity, production and additional income per acre from the benefiting households.
Farmers have recorded increased production from 800kgs per acre to 1,350kgs per season, per acre.
Arise and Shine demand for raw maize now stands at 2,500 metric tons per month; amounting to over 30,000MT per annum. This demand is expected to double in the next Three years as the company undertake major investments in production technology. To meet this increasing demand, intend to scale up farmers mobilization to cover more maize growing districts of Omoro, Gulu, Nwoya, Pader, Kitgum, Kole, Apac amongst others in order
